Carriers & Appointments
Manage which carriers you're appointed with, set commission structures, and control underwriting appetite.
Your Carrier Roster
View all appointed carriers at Settings > Carriers.
Each carrier shows:
- Name (with carrier logo)
- Status (Active, Inactive, Pending)
- Commission Split (standard and new business rates)
- Appetite (Full, Selective, Closed)
- Last Quote (when you last shopped this carrier)
Adding a Carrier
Appoint a New Carrier
- Go to Settings > Carriers
- Click Add Carrier
- Search by name (e.g., "State Farm", "Travelers")
- BindPilot auto-populates carrier info (address, phone, rating data)
- Set your appointment details:
Commission Structure
Standard Commission: Your default rate (e.g., 15%)
New Business Commission: Higher rate for new policies (e.g., 18%)
Renewal Commission: Explicit renewal rate (optional; defaults to standard)
BindPilot tracks commission earned per policy and per carrier for commission reconciliation.
Underwriting Appetite
Control which risks you want this carrier to see.
Options:
- Full — Accept all risks (default)
- Selective — Customize appetite
- Closed — Don't quote this carrier
Selective Appetite:
- Exclude zip codes (e.g., high-hazard areas)
- Exclude risk types (e.g., no business use auto)
- Exclude claims history (e.g., no more than 1 claim in 3 years)
- Set minimum/maximum coverage limits
When you run a comparative quote, BindPilot only returns carriers whose appetite matches the risk.
Renewal Settings
Auto-Shop Days: When should the Renewal Agent re-shop this carrier?
- Standard: 60 days before expiration
- Early: 90 days (for carriers with slower turnaround)
- Late: 45 days (for carriers with quick decisions)
Editing a Carrier
- Go to Settings > Carriers > [Carrier Name]
- Update commission splits, appetite, or renewal settings
- Click Save
Changes take effect immediately for new quotes.
Deactivating a Carrier
You can temporarily pause a carrier without losing appointment data:
- Click [Carrier Name] > Deactivate
- The carrier disappears from new quote shopping
- Existing policies and renewal tracking continue
- Re-activate anytime
Removing a Carrier
Permanently remove a carrier (use cautiously):
- Click [Carrier Name] > Remove
- Historical data is archived but inaccessible
- Cannot be undone without contacting support
Carrier Performance Metrics
BindPilot tracks per-carrier metrics (available in Analytics > Carriers):
- Quotes Generated — How many times you quoted this carrier
- Policies Placed — How many policies bound
- Close Rate — % of quotes that became policies
- Average Premium — Your average premium per risk type
- Commission Earned — Total commission earned
Use this data to:
- Identify over/under-leveraged carriers
- Negotiate better commission splits
- Decide which carriers to emphasize in sales
Next: Set up renewals to auto-shop carriers at renewal time.
